"Houston, We Have a Hoax."
"This LTX71 concealable mike is part of the same system NASA used when they faked the Apollo moon landings." Dan Ayrkoyd's character in the movie Sneakers, a conspiracy nut mentions this in passing as one of his theories of massive hoaxes being pulled over on the American people by our government.
The idea that the Apollo moon landings were a hoax is actually a popular conspiracy theory that has been around basically as long as the moon program has. Several books, television and radio interviews, and of course websites have sprung up dedicated to uncovering the hoax.
Why would NASA want to fake the Apollo moon landings? Several reasons.
The basis for most of these theories is questions with the pictures. Websites (see
https://www.angelfire.com/ut/aylett/eth69.html) and books (most notably John Kaysing's We Never Went to the Moon) are full of questionable pictures from Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's flight. Why do the shadows go in different directions if the only source of light is the sun? Why didn't the landing module leave a crater when the rockets fired as it touched down? Why are there no stars in some of the pictures of the moon? One theory is that the pictures weren't taken on the moon. They were taken on a soundstage somewhere, filmed like any other movie. It has been said that as many as 100 million Americans tend to believe the landings on the moon weren't real. Books like Moongate, We Never Went to the Moon, and NASA Mooned America tell about what, if true, could be the greatest trick ever pulled.
The only evidence most of us have to believe what we have been told about the moon landings is the television footage we all saw. This was back before Watergate or the scandal-ridden Clinton administration, we trusted what we were told. What take did they get planting the flag on? Millions of Americans watched Neil Armstrong climb down the ladder and take one small step for man… or did we? Next time you see the film, maybe you should ask yourself, "Did the director yell 'CUT!'?" Maybe the reason why the movie 2001 looks so convincing was that Stanley Kubrick had already shot a fictional tale of space once before.
